Attendance Policy

Students are permitted to attend 3 hours of class each week. Students should only attend the class in which they are enrolled. If a student misses class for any reason, they are not permitted to attend a different class. There are no make-up classes.

Practice Policy

Consistent practice is required in order to progress through the ranks in the Black Dragon Kenpo Karate system. Students are required to practice at home for 20 minutes a day on at least 3 days they do not have class. Students who attend class on Mon/Wed/Sat can mark practice on Tue/Thur/Fri/Sun. Students who attend class on Tue/Thur can mark practice on Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun. Class attendance does not count as at-home practice. Please be sure to practice at home for 20 minutes on “non-class” days. This will ensure the consistency that is needed for promotion.
All practice should be documented through the online practice form which can be accessed here or through the resources tab on the dojo website.  Parents must “electronically” sign each online practice record in order for the student to get credit. Practice logs are due each week by midnight Sunday night. Late submissions will not be accepted.
**A note for parents: Please be actively engaged in your child’s practice time at home. We have provided practice resources online to help facilitate at-home practice. Students who don’t practice outside of class progress very slowly, and some don’t progress at all. This can contribute to the student feeling bored and frustrated. Class attendance is not enough time for successful progression. We will teach your student during class time and we rely on you to help your child use the resources we provide to practice between class times.
You can find the weekly practice form here.

Belt Promotion Policy

Students will be invited to test when the instructor decides they are ready for promotion. Students and parents should not ask to be tested. A fee is charged for each testing session. The fee includes the testing session, belt, embroidery, and certificate and is due the day before the test date.
Minimum requirements for test eligibility:
Practicing at home and attending classes are required to be eligible for belt promotion tests. Each student must:
  • complete a minimum of 80% of available at-home practice and document it through the online practice form each week. (100% = 20 minutes of practice a day on 3 non-class days)
  • attend a minimum of 80% of in class training (100% = 3 hours of class each week)
Maintaining these minimums does not guarantee the student will test, but is the minimum required to be eligible for and invited to test.

Policies updated June 2023 and are subject to change.
